Root Canal Treatments
Root canal treatment is an intervention performed to save teeth in cases such as decay, fracture, traumatic injury that occur in our teeth. Root canal treatment is a treatment performed to protect the remaining tooth structure, remove the infection and save the teeth due to damage and infection caused by conditions such as caries, fracture, traumatic injury to the living tissues of the tooth. There is a pulp, which is a living tissue under the enamel and dentin layers, which are the hard tissue visible from the outside of our teeth. Pulp tissue consists of living cells, blood vessels and nerves that allow us to feel stimuli such as cold-hot. If the pulp tissue is infected or damaged by various factors, root canal treatment is necessary to prevent tooth loss.
The biggest reason for root canal treatment is tooth decay. Dental caries that are not intervened in the initial stage progresses over time and reaches the pulp tissue and causes infection. This situation results in pain caused by cold-hot factors, spontaneous severe toothache, pain during biting and chewing. In cases where the infection progresses further, it may spread to the surrounding tissues of the tooth through the root canals and cause abscess formation, which may be accompanied by pain. In such a case, swelling can be seen in the gums, palate and facial and surrounding tissues adjacent to the tooth. This condition accompanied by pain and swelling indicates that the infection is acute. In some cases, the infection may progress chronically with little or no symptoms. Chronically advanced infection manifests itself with pimple-like formations accompanied by a purulent discharge in the gums or lesions formed by the destruction of the bone around the root, which we can detect on dental x-rays. Root canal treatment aims to keep the tooth functional and restore the health of the surrounding tissues by removing infected or damaged pulp tissue and other infection foci from the root canals due to conditions such as fractures and trauma.
The duration of the procedure may vary depending on the number of root-canal of the tooth or conditions such as infection status, obstruction in the canals, root slopes. Average duration is between 60-90 minutes. It is usually completed in a single session, but in some cases with abscess and swelling, more than one session can be performed.
Root canal treatment can be performed by a dentist or endodontist (root canal treatment specialist). Endodontists are dentists who have specialised in pulp and periapical (around the root) diseases by receiving the necessary theoretical and clinical training for at least 3 years after graduating from the faculty of dentistry.
All root canal treatments performed at Denturla are performed only by root canal treatment specialists (endodontists) with the most up-to-date technological devices.
